We have received the USM Internal Audit information and the policy email about whistle-blowing. Where did all this come from? It seems almost too much of a coincidence that it is coming at a time when the UMB-UMCP merger is afoot.
There is no relationship between the presence of the USM Internal Audit Office, the Whistle-Blower Policy, and the UMB–UMCP merger study. The items are unrelated. The merger study was requested of the Board of Regents during last spring’s legislative session. The USM Internal Audit Office has been present for years. The campus Whistle-Blower Policy was adopted as part of a sound management structure and process to ensure that faculty, staff, and students have a safe, protected, and direct process to report issues of potential fraud and abuse, and violations of compliance obligations. Further, reporters are protected from retaliation as described in the policy, VIII–7.11(B).
